Susceptible to Possibility

When you’re striving to do your best work or be your best self then you’re also more susceptible to pain.  The pain of not meeting expectations, of being misunderstood or discovering weaknesses.  As Seth Godin said:

“The easiest way to avoid the pain is to lull it to sleep by finding a job that numbs you.”

But being susceptible to pain also means you're susceptible to possibility.  The possibility of earning the endless rewards that come with shining your light instead of hiding it.

Fail Safe

Once in a while I encounter something that nails everything Live Unbound stands for. Take the time to read it, I promise it's worth it!

Cherished Roadblocks

Sometimes our problems become cherished roadblocks, convenient excuses why we can’t move forward or take a leap of faith.

Yes, doing it is risky and avoiding it might preserve a perfect, failure-free life.  But perfection will never be as respected as a determined attempt at doing something remarkable.

If you don't take the risk, you'll risk everything else in return.

The Real Ladder Of Success

The ladder of success isn’t a ladder, it’s a series of steps with gaps interspersed along the way.  Only those that take leaps and risk the fall will rise.  Then there comes a point where the gaps are too far apart and you’ll need to create the steps that don’t exist.  This is where people freeze, trapped between where they are and where they want to be.  This space is where you innovate instead of replicate, lead instead of follow, and stand out instead of blending in.

There Is Always A Way

To be truly fulfilled you must create your own path, take risks, stay in touch with what you truly want and take action towards it.  Yes there might be failures, setbacks or slow starts but they are all just detours on the road to success.  If one idea doesn’t work, try a new one.  If that doesn’t work, try a new one.  Don’t stop until it works.  There is always a way and you will find it.

The Reality Distortion Field

The earth is not flat and cigarettes are not good for your health.  We were wrong then so what makes us think we are right now?

The facts we live by (the ones that often limit us) could very well be false.  Despite this we acquire our beliefs and rational based on these facts.  But some people ignore facts, they ignore logic, they ignore reality because they feel it’s based on a human misunderstanding. These people shape our future and they redefine our limitations.

They are the reason why there has been more progress in the last 100 years then there has in the last billion.  For example, Steve Jobs lived in a “reality distortion field” (as his colleagues named it) which enabled him to build an empire that revolutionized how human beings interact with each other.  Felix Baumgartner skydived from space and Roger Bannister ran a mile in under 4 minutes.

This is what I mean by live unbound.  Set your limitations based on what YOU feel like you can accomplish instead of abiding by guidelines the world has set for you.

Be careful of the logic you’ve acquired because when you feel like you can, it will easily justify why you can’t.

CREATE LIKE A GOD AND WORK LIKE A SLAVE

Here are 5 random thoughts I'd like to share:

1. A pessimist daydreams about misery while on a road trip to doom, as opposed to the optimist, who is aware that he controls the car.

2. A failure is a successful discovery of one approach that doesn’t work.  That and a reminder that you’re one step closer.

3. The problem with human beings is not that they are afraid to die, it’s that they are afraid to live.

4. Your life is like a book but you’re not the main character, you’re the writer.

5. Rock bottom is a solid foundation for rebuilding.

DO 1 THING YOU'RE AFRAID OF EVERYDAY

To most people being afraid means hide, regress and do anything you can to restore the feeling of safety.  But ask yourself - where would you be in life if you associated your fears with opportunity, progress, discovery and satisfaction?

Nobody is fearless but some have the boldness to embrace their fears.  They understand that they are stepping stones to greatness.

LOGIC VS. TRUTH

Logic is the greatest enemy of truth.  Like Ambrose Bierce said: “It’s the art of thinking in strict accordance with the limitations of the human misunderstanding.” When we feel like we can, logic justifies why we can’t.  Just as important as learning is unlearning the lies which restrict our potential and suffocate our imagination.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR JOB, QUIT (CONSIDER THIS A SIGN).

As I’ve said before I hope I see the day when the word “work” is no longer perceived as putting time and energy into an undesirable act for a desired result.  I think the key is to change the desired result from money to waking up feeling excited about the “work” you’re about to do.  Funny thing is once you do that the money will follow.

Companies like Ten Tree succeeded because they invested in an idea that holds value and benefits the world.  They plants 10 trees for every shirt they sell and since they launched just 10 months ago they’ve planted over 150,000 trees! I’m proud to say that Ten Tree is now selling LiveUnbound apparel.

On another note, if you’ve never seen it before, this is the HOLSTEE manifesto.

WHAT NOT TO WORRY ABOUT

First of all, everything you can’t control! But more importantly don’t worry about failure because then you won’t try anything. And if you worry too much while you’re trying something then chances are you will fail. For example when you’re doing a trick if you think about falling then you will fall. It’s that simple. Worrying is like praying for something you don’t want.

Red Bull is officially no longer an energy drink and the sky is officially no longer the limit.

The problem of unemployment and underemployment (unfulfilling work) is here to stay unless we take matters into our own hands. Luckily, the best opportunities today are centered around creating your own assets. “Real jobs” are no longer the safe route because you have to rely on someone else in an unpredictable economy. You can’t exchange 40 hours (of unfulfilling work) a week for a secure life anymore so ask yourself - what do you really want to do?

Is there anything you do regularly that makes you forget what time it is? When you’re completely lost in the ride, the destination becomes irrelevant. The beauty of each moment is no longer distracted by the dream of a brighter future.

I recently took a day trip to WaveHouse San Diego to shoot the Flowboarding Championships. They were doing some pretty amazing tricks, check it out (and share if you like).

DIVE INTO AN AMBITIOUS CHALLENGE THIS MONTH

One where chances of failure are high. Only when you’re face to face with defeat, an unfamiliar side of yourself takes over and overcomes. This psychological strength is unknown to the play-it-safers. Not because they don’t have it inside them, because it’s not attracted to small endeavors. It needs bold, courageous effort to flourish.

Why is it that what people can accomplish is often greater than what they believe they can.  Our limitations are an illusion created by us and they will be broken by us.

When you're optimistic you no longer need a sense of control. You know that life will flow as it will, taking you where you need to be.

Scene from "Where the trail ends".

Life is a river; always moving forward, barreling straight through the impossible. Some of us are disconnected from the flow of the river. This disconnect kills joy, interaction and purpose. Life's greatest adventure, all it's beauty, sails by unnoticed. But the river is never that far off. There is always a way back into the rush of moving forward.

We spend so much time thinking, worrying, questioning. Spend a few seconds lost in a moment. No time to think, just reaction and focus. All the worry and the want washed away by the rush. That's living (pharaphrased from Life Cycles).
